With 38 stables, 3 stallion boxes and covered yards, a walking machine, quality pasture management and an on site vet, the horses at Little Avondale want for nothing.
Situated two miles east of Masterton and consisting of 283 acres of rich Ruamahunga river silt, all paddocks are Magnum fenced and accessible by lanes, making it easier and safer to move and inspect stock.
The buildings consist of three separate stable blocks, each with yards and small paddocks adjacent.
Little Avondale's farm policy is to re-grass three to four paddocks each year with new vigorous rye grass and clover by direct drill, ensuring high quality pasture.
"It's the very best grass," says Sam Williams. "We also use cattle and sheep to graze the paddocks out and in the summer we're able to harrow and roll. This is so important for equine nutrition."
With attendants on duty 24 hours a day, team numbers swell to 20 during the busiest sales period but Sam, with ongoing assistance from Buzz, is always there to take overall responsibility.
"I treat any horse which comes here as I would treat one of my own. We have a special responsibility when owners trust us with their mares and foals and it's critical to respect that."
