Per Incanto Tops Karaka

Per Incanto and Karaka seem to go together like the Crusaders and finals rugby, and the son of Street Cry was in his element again at the South Auckland Sales centre on Friday topping the weanling section of the National Weanling and Broodmare sale with the highest price lot and finishing as the leading sire on average for three or more sold.

The top priced weanling amongst the 182 lots catalogued belonged to Cambridge’s Brighthill Farm. Bred by Lady Tavistock, who has been a big supporter of Per Incanto, sold their Per Incanto colt from the Redoute’s Choice mare She's Apples for $150,000 to Sam Beatson from Riversley Park.

Per Incanto averaged $68,250 for four weanlings sold.

LA purchased the top priced broodmare at the sale, paying $120,000 for the dual stakes placed All Too Hard mare Windermere, in foal to Sword of State. Windermere is likely to be mated to Per Incanto this season.

On a slightly nostalgic note, there were mixed emotions when the farm, on behalf of the Block Partnership and the Springvale Trust, sold dual Group 1 winning mare Xanadu to Australia for $60,000. Born and raised at LA, her most noted success as a broodmare to date is her Per Incanto son Sixth Generation, trained by Jamie Richards in Hong who has won four of his last five starts.

Aside from Sam greeting me at Karaka every year with “Have I got a horse for you” it’s about breeding successful and sound horses
